Curved glass structure
Project

RICHARDS CCTV

Following a recommendation from an existing client, Richards CCTV approached the practice with a view to designing and managing the construction of a new warehouse, office and repair centre.

The Black Country Development Corporation had highlighted a 1.50 acre derelict site adjacent a redundant railway and were prepared to offer financial support to ensure development took place.

The opportunity was further enhanced by the proposals to construct the Black Country Spine Road with a major traffic island adjacent to the site. Owing to its future prominent location, the site was highlighted for special design status with any buildings having to reflect a landmark location.

To meet this criteria the Practice proposed that the main entrance and conference facility be housed in a curved glass structure centred along a design axis through the traffic island and along the dual carriageway in order to maximise its impact on approaching traffic. The site was further enhanced by the decision of Centro to locate a metro station within 100 metres of the site with the new line running along the rear boundary of the site.

On behalf of Richards CCTV the Practice obtained a grant through the corporation to provide funding for the grouting of shallow mine workings which existed beneath the site.

The project was completed in October 1997 having taken eight months to complete and won the acclaim of representatives of the corporation and local business people.
