CHURCH PHARMACY

The Practice was approached by the proprietors of Church Pharmacy following a recommendation from Wolverhampton Metropolitan Borough Council in regard to the Practices known track record with refurbishment and obtaining grant assistance for local clients.

Outline schemes were prepared and an application for Grant Assistance made which was approved in December 1993. Detailed plans and elevations were then formally submitted to the local Authority for planning approval which was granted in February 1994.

The scheme involved the total refurbishment of the 19th Century building creating a larger premises for Church Pharmacy and extra retail premises for let. The upper floors were converted into six two bedroom flats which the client is retaining and making available for rent.

During the planning consultation process the Practice worked closely with the planning and conservation officers to ensure that the facades of the building, which had fallen into a very poor standard of repair, were reinstated using key historical references in the architectural design of the shop fronts, rendered mouldings and windows which were specially made to preserve the buildings Victorian character. The project was of particular interest to Wolverhampton Metropolitan Borough Council who were at that time commencing works to upgrade and pedestrianize Bilston High Street with Church Pharmacy being regarded as a gateway building at the eastern end.
