PORTHMADOG GOLF CLUB
With the ever growing popularity
of the game of golf and the resultant pressure of increasing
membership, Porthmadog Golf Club decided to embark on a substantial
refurbishment of their facilities to cater for the modern
golfer.
The Clubhouse comprised of an old
slate built house with bar and dining facilities, changing
rooms and toilets being housed in a single storey extension
built in the 1960's. Annexed to this was a prefabricated building
which housed the Pro-shop.
Building Design Practice were commissioned to produce a design
that; was to incorporate an increased bar and lounge area
with dance floor, a dining room capable of seating one hundred
people with an up-to-date commercial kitchen facility, a committee
room, golfers spike bar, secretaries office, snooker room
and new locker room facilities with improved shower and washing
areas.
The final design incorporated large air conditioned spaces
together with carefully co-ordinated interior decorations
and soft furnishings chosen by the Practice. The exterior
of the building has a traditional slate tiled mansard roof,
designed to marry together the old and the new. The stained
timber bay windows and white painted rendered walls have produced
a clean and modern form which is complimentary to the materials
and buildings of the area.
The construction programme. was carried out in two phases
spanning one year. The phasing was arranged to allow the Club
to function fully and was completed on time.
The design has won wide acclaim from the Club members and
was highly praised by the Chairman of the Welsh Development
Agency who formally opened the new building in June 1992. |
