TIPTON & COSELEY BUILDING SOCIETY

The Practices known achievements in obtaining Central Government grant aid prompted an enquiry from the Board of Tipton & Coseley Building Society who were interested in purchasing a site for their new headquarters in Tipton. Their existing premises, built in the mid-1960's, did not possess the space needed for future expansion and the site constraints prevented any possible extension.

Building Design Practice submitted an application for City Grant to the Department of the Environment which resulted in a grant being obtained to make the development possible and subsequently the site was purchased from the Local Authority. Planning Permission for the 8,000 sq. ft. offices and main banking hall was obtained in August 1991 and construction commenced in October 1991.

The facades were designed using traditional brickwork detailing enhanced with distinctive features, such as the Victorian clock and roof cupola, in response to the historical townscape of the area. The interior of the building was fully designed by the Practice and comprises a spacious banking hall with the most modern security facilities available, main office areas fitted throughout with computer access floors and high quality staff and training facilities. The overall plan strategy allows for a 4,000 sq. ft. future extension.

All the internal finishes and colours were carefully chosen to give a relaxed atmosphere whilst still maintaining a clear corporate image. This same image is to be repeated throughout all the Tipton & Coseley branch offices. A spacious area at the rear surrounded by good quality landscaping provides the customers with parking facilities linked to a rear entrance into the banking hall suite. Local people have praised the new building for the way in which it has transformed the High Street in Tipton.

The building was officially opened in October 1992 by the Right Honourable Betty Boothroyd MP, Speaker of the House of Commons.
